Whiteway, Newfoundland-Labrador

M onday, September 8th, 2014, the night of the harvest moon. It struck me late in the evening, after a very stressful day, that I wanted to explore some of Newfoundland. Get back to what is the backbone of Dawn's Creations and why we work so hard so we can enjoy Newfoundland treasures and inspire new works. It didn't take a lot of convincing and the husband was onboard .We packed up our family, school supplies and work and we hit the road. We made our way out of town knowing we had to off road camp our first night with no destination in mind. We ended in Hearts Delight - Islington at 12:16 am and headed straight to bed. A Newfoundland Road Diary destination to be explored on another day.

After a great sleep and breakfast we headed off, ending up in Whiteway, home of Shag Rock. Whiteway was named after Sir William Vallance Whiteway who was once Premier of Newfoundland. While driving down the main road we passed Shag View RV park; from the road I saw the view and the fence and I knew this was where we had to camp. We turned around and headed back. As soon as we were on the campsite all I kept thinking was, "oh yeah this is it". Called the number on the sign and booked.

First thing Kyle, the furbabies and I headed to the beach, leaving the husband to sort the camper setup stuff. Just taking in all in the sun, view and tossing rocks; this was just what I needed. Soon we settled into the campsite, and then headed out for the day checking out the surrounding communities making notes for future trips. Not much later we got back to our campsite after an awesome day out and about. We got to enjoy a stunning sunset and it made me realize why we do what we do and why we love NL so much. Living in town you don't get to see many stars, a sight I immensely enjoyed at ShagView RV Park. Not long after eating and researching Whiteway we hunkered down for the night.

The next morning while everyone was still sleeping, I headed to the beach with coffee and work in hand. While working, the only sound to be heard was the waves - so peaceful and the view so stunning. Once work was finished I headed back to the camper and collected the furbabies. With our backpacks on we headed out exploring. Next to our campsite was Shag Rock Café and Gift Shop, I really wanted to check out the store and food but of course it was way too early in the morning. I see a day trip back in our future. Once we had our walk we headed back to the RV site. One by one everyone got up, we ate and headed out exploring. Not far down the main road we found Drovers Store which sells a bit of everything. Yet again across the street another view of Shag Rock and a beach to comb. Not far is the Jimmy Rowe walking trail; a 2km walk with breathtaking views. The walking trail was named after Jimmy Rowe who was a master shipbuilder and started the shipping dock in the community of Whiteway. Close to the trail was an old turbine along with information about Drover's premises history.

We only got to spend 2 days in Whiteway and I know there is so much more that we never experienced or saw in Whiteway. Now on my list is to find out about the Shag Rock Festival. Then and on a calm day is to kayak to Shag Rock, eat at the Shag Rock Café and find more hidden treasures in the beautiful community of Whiteway, NL.
